![]() ![]() My hopes were that each little sub branch on the shoot would become new branches off the trunk. I carved a segmented channel starting about a third up, sort of like a dotted line, and laid the whip shoot in it at varying spots up the trunk, securing it at each contact point with grafting tape. Like I said, we had a shocker of a growing season last time, and the tree didn’t throw as many shoots on the trunk as I’d hoped, so I tried some creative inarch grafting on the left side as there was one shoot I’d let grow, low down near the base which was perfect for what I had in mind. It is early spring in Australia and the tree has just leafed out. Shane’s trunk has completely fused and he has started building branches. I recently asked my friend Shane Martin how his Trident fusion was progressing. I will update again in the fall after the trees have gone dormant and we can get a better look at the trunks. We are into the second week of August and have probably seen about 80 – 90% of this seasons growth. ![]() The base of the trunk is thickening nicely. I wired up a new apex but it is still about 6 inches shorter that the old apex. I broke the old apex off trying to wire some movement into the trunk. We can’t forget the upside down Black Pine. About 14 inches tall.Ībout 2 dozen buds popped and I tied some of them to fill gaps. The Mangetsu Azalea trunk fusion has shown a lot of improvement since I repotted. The base is really tight and I expect to see significant fusion next year. The Ogon trunk fusion is progressing nicely. Several seedlings are beginning to thicken nicely. The Japanese Maple trunk fusion is actually progressing faster than I originally anticipated. These seedlings are from the same seed lot as CQ1 above but I grew them for one year before assembly. The Chinese Quince 2 trunk fusion is healthy but also slow in growing. They didn’t have much root and have been slow to get established. I attached these seedlings when they were about one month old. The Chinese Quince 1 trunk fusion is progressing very slowly. Some of the fused seedlings are already starting to heal their scars. The Trident Maple trunk fusion has shown the best progress so far. There are several more trees to remove on the other side as well. It is time to remove the seedling ( make that tree ) on right. The base shows that fusion is complete here. The Dawn Redwood trunk fusion is progressing nicely. Summer is not the best time to show trunk fusion progress because all the trees look like overgrown bushes. ![]()
